Paula Angel was executed in Las Vegas, New Mexico in 1861 for murdering her former lover, who had lied to her about his wife and family. Only nineteen years old, she was taunted in the days leading up to her execution by the sheriff, who then botched her hanging. Despite pleas from the townspeople to let her go, the sheriff bound her again and was successful the second time in taking her life.
We remember Paula as a woman who was left with very little options in a time when "virginity" was prized above all else, and honor her in this painting.
